Strong Sale Growth Continues
Industry sales continue to grow at a faster rate than most other retail groups.
New Zealand's No 1 Retail Employer
The restaurant/foodservice industry employs 49,560 (full-time equivalent) or 61,160 (full-time and part-time workers). 80 percent of this workforce are employed in restaurants, cafes and coffee houses.
Operations Open But Others Close
It is estimated that the number of units in the year 2000 only grew by 1.9 percent. The industry has a large number of openings, but a compensating number of closures.
The Shining Area
Catering Services as a market segment grew by 33 percent in 2000 and an equally impressive growth of 25 percent is forecast for 2001. Health, aged care, armed services and education establishments, where they once provided their own in-house catering are now finding that it is more efficient and economical to out-source these services.
Restaurant Sales Tops
Restaurants (2000) with an average income of $503,000 topped our seven industry groups.
